Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument offers visits a glimpse into the lives of the Mogollon Native American Culture who called this area home from sometime around 1280 to the early 1300s. Established in 1907, the 533 acre monument is located 44 miles north of Silver City on the edge of the Gila Wilderness. The dwellings were constructed around 1280 and were built into caves and open areas. Both types can be viewed at the monument. The walls were built of stone and all remaining timber is original. Sometime in the 1300s, the Mogollon people left the area; their reasons for leaving and where they went is still unknown. It is speculated they joined up with Pueblo Indians from the north or south.
