As the country’s first federally funded monument dedicated to the courageous men who were apart of one of the most brutal pages in world history, “Heroes of Bataan,” the larger-than-life bronze statue, stand as constant reminder of the 70,000 men captured and forced to make the deadly journey during WWII. The monument was dedicated on April 13, 2002 and is located in Veterans Park in Las Cruces. The pathway leading up to the statue has the actual foot prints of a handful of survivors.

Historic Old Mesilla

Once a popular stop on the way to the west coast, Mesilla is now a quaint Mexican style village located just outside of Las Cruces. Enjoy great traditional Mexican food, shops, galleries and boutiques. Famed western outlaw Billy the Kid stood trial in the old Mesilla courthouse, and what is now La Posta de Mesilla restaurant was once an important stop on the Butterfield Stagecoach.

Capturing a piece of New Mexico history is the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum- one of the world’s largest agricultural museum. Here, visitors can relive the 3,000 year old agricultural history and tradition of life in New Mexico through artifacts and photographs left behind by some of the states oldest farming and ranching families. Several live demonstrations including an old fashioned blacksmith forge raw iron into valuable tools. Gift shop and guided tours available.

Experience the exceptional site of over 275 square-miles of pure what gypsum dunes. The dunes provide recreational opportunities like “sand surfing”. The park offers several ongoing programs including Friday Night Star Talks, tours of Lake Lucero – the source of the parks gypsum - the Sunset Stroll Nature Walk and the evening and full moon night programs.
