Lecture Series

Jake Spidle presents “Life & Death (Mostly Death) in New Mexico 100 Years Ago.” This lecture compares mortality in the rough circumstances of pioneer New Mexico with that of some of the more well-established and stable parts of the country, with surprising results. Admission is a suggested donation of $2.

Antique Treasures Day
June 14, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Don’t miss this once-a-year opportunity to see the thousands of artifacts inside the Museum’s Collections Storage Room. Visitors will be taken on special guided tours where they will learn about the Museum’s collections process and how to preserve artifacts. Regular admission applies ($5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and $2 for children 5 to 17).

What was life like before video games? What did pioneer children do for fun?

Learn about and enjoy some of the popular games and toys of the 1800s. Children in the class will make a thaumatrope, a bean bag, spool toys, and play classic games such as “Button, button!” Pre-registration is required. $10

June 17 (Wednesday): Papermaking 101
Grades: K-3rd; 10am to 1pm; Class Limit: 15
Instructors: Christina Garton and Cassandra Lockwood

Learn the fun and easy art of papermaking. Experiment with glitter, feathers and confetti to make creative designs. Students will also learn the basics of origami and other historical paper crafts and arts. Children should dress in clothing that can get wet and bring a lunch. Pre-registration is required. $15

Learn the fun and easy art of papermaking.  Each student will design their own stationary and learn basic bookbinding techniques to create their own journal along with other paper themed crafts. Children should dress in clothing that can get wet and bring a lunch.

Grades 3rd-7th; 10am to 2pm; Class Limit: 20

Explore the many crafty uses of wool and cotton felt during this two day camp. Students on the first day will learn to make felt pouches and other crafts. They second day they will learn to make usable and wearable crafts with store bought felt. Children should dress in clothing that can get wet, wear tennis shoes and bring lunch each day.

Making the Past Come Alive: 1776 in New Mexico
Grades 5th-8th; 10a.m.-1p.m; Class Limit: 15

Interested in history? Have you ever wanted to travel back in time? Learn the basics of doing living history and improvisational performance.

Students will develop and portray a historical character from the Spanish Colonial era. The class will dress in historically accurate costumes and stage an outdoor time travel performance to the New Mexico of 1776 on the last day.

Please bring lunch each day. Pre-registration is required. $50

Sunday, May 24  8:00 a.m. — 5:00 p.m. @ the Visitor Center (Unser Blvd. NW at Western Trail) Petroglyph Annual Open House Petroglyph National Monument celebrates its annual open house with refreshments and a 15% discount on all items purchased (except American Indian crafts) on this day. Browse our large and diverse collection of rock imagery titles and other titles pertaining to Albuquerque area resources including Southwestern cooking, geology, New Mexico history, Pueblo history, native plants and animals, children’s books, and books on regional National Park Service units. From 9am to 4pm enjoy observing how traditional Pueblo Indian bread is prepared and baked in horno ovens.
Dolores and daughter Josephine Toya will share this 400 year old Pueblo tradition with you. At 2 pm Cipriano Vigil and Family will entertain you while singing traditional folk music and songs of northern New Mexico. Free event.

On Saturday May 23rd, at 1:00PM you will hear the sweet sound of 25 or more Dodge Vipers cruising into the main parking lot at the Rio Grande Botanic Garden to visit the facility as part of the NM Viper Club’s road trip. The Dodge Viper is a sports car with over 500 horse power, roaring from a V-10, with 6 forward gears, and capable of 200 miles per hour. Today’s Dodge Viper price range can go over $100,000. Michael Shepherd, current NM Viper Club president, recalls that “the NM Viper Club had their first meeting in 1996 with three Dodge Vipers. Today, NM Club members have one of the highest percentages of members-to-owners of all the states.”  Shepherd’s 2006 Dodge Viper SRT 10 blue Viper is one of the best, winning three Super Nationals, two Southwest Nationals,  Route 66 Outstanding Contemporary car, and over 25 awards at rod and custom shows.

The Rio Grande Botanic Gardens is in for a treat. There will be Dodge Vipers from Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and New Mexico. Generations I, II, and III will be represented.  Garden visitors and passersby may see the new 2009 Dodge Viper, ACR Vipers, and Vipers with super chargers. One of the NM Viper Club members, Jim Baughman, owns a 2004 red Dodge Viper SRT 10, which is supercharged, running on jet fuel, with 20 fuel injectors. That’s 1,100 horse power. Now that’s, an awesome sound!  You’ll definitely hear them coming.
