Saturday, April 25th will mark the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s largest annual community event Family Fun and Wellness Day. This day-long celebration is held in conjunction with the international celebration Día del Niño celebrated throughout Latin America since 1998. It is a day for parents, families and communities to celebrate their commitment to young people and to show their love, compassion and support for them. Cities around the world celebrate Día del Niño to promote awareness of the status of children and to empower communities to act on their behalf.
This year’s celebration, a free event from beginning at 11 am and running through 3 pm will be held on the NHCC’s Plaza Mayor. Activities include free youth performances, dance and movement workshops, hands-on art, storytelling, a rock climbing wall, and much more. The Center’s Foundation is partnering with the New Mexico Hispanic Medical Association in offering a free health fair which will feature dozens of free medical services for the underserved and uninsured. Services will include: child immunizations; well child exams; screenings for: blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, skin cancer and Alzheimer’s disease; eye exams for children and adults; HIV testing; hepatitis A & B vaccinations; breast cancer prevention; mammograms; medical discount cards; health plan enrollment; Medicaid and Medicare enrollment; informative workshops; traditional & natural healing and massages.
This year will also feature the second annual Ride to the Center, a bike ride to benefit the NHCC Foundation. This ride encourages families to be active and healthy and will take cyclists through the nature trail and various parts of the city on different length routes. Sponsors for this year’s celebration include Presbyterian Healthcare Services, UNM Hospitals, City of Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, CYFD, AstraZeneca, New Mexico Mutual, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, Molina Healthcare, Hot 95.1, and Radio Lobo FM.
