Second Annual Folf Art Flea Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico
This year’s one-day Folk Art Flea Market will be held Saturday, April 4, 2009, with doors opening to the general public at 10 A.M. until 4 P.M. Last year’s first Flea Market had event organizers worrying aloud: “but what if no one COMES!” They need not have worried. The line of people waiting to get into the Museum extended across Milner Plaza long before the doors opened at 10 am. Excited shoppers found bargains from every country, of every conceivable material and in every price range. It was a bargain hunter’s dream come true, a folk art maven’s fantasy. Recycled folk art! And organizers expect this year’s event to be even bigger, even better.
This is not your typical flea market or garage sale. There will be no toasters or old telephones. What there will be are donations of fabulous folk art from private collectors, travelers, and retail businesses, donations of gently worn or used pieces which no longer have a place in their homes or shops. “We had sale tables representing each country,” commented co-chair Ginger Smith. “Our textile table was amazing, as was the ceramics section. And the clothes! The prices ranged from several cents per item to several hundred dollars, all were huge bargains. We are expecting an even bigger event this year in view of the local and national economy.”
We were so overwhelmed by donors and donations last year that we are now devoting a full five days this year for intake of goods. We will accept your donations, in exchange for a tax- deductible donation receipt, beginning Sunday, March 29 through April 2, 10 am - 4 pm, at the Museum of International Folk Art auditorium.” said co-chair Judith Haden. “We’d like our new donors to go to our website to fully understand the items we need, what we think will sell, and in what condition. We would love to again see ceramics, ethnic apparel, jewelry, small furniture, framed art, sculpture, linens, masks and so much more!”
Proceeds from the sale will benefit exhibitions and educational programs at the Museum of International Folk Art. The Folk Art Committee organizes the event. Members of the Friends of Folk Art can shop early and enjoy a continental breakfast 8AM until 10AM before the general public arrives at 10AM.
