Taos, New Mexico Festival of Trees & Wreaths Helps Those Who Help Others

The annual Festival of Trees and Wreaths, which brings people together to aid the efforts of Taos County’s non-profit organizations, is Friday (December 5, 2008) at El Monte Sagrado Resort in Taos. The scheduled start is around 6 p.m., at the conclusion of the annual lighting ceremony of the Christmas tree on Taos Plaza.

“The Festival of Trees and Wreaths is about community, and about giving,” said Chris Baker, publisher of The Taos News and founder of the event. “It’s a way for people to help those who have, in turn, dedicated their lives to helping others.” Now in its eighth year, the event has raised more than $150,000 to benefit approximately 40 local non-profit organizations.

Artificial trees or wreaths are purchased by individuals or businesses that decorate the item and determine which local non-profit group will benefit by the sale of that item at the silent auction. Bids close at 8 p.m. that night. The winning bidder can either keep the tree or wreath or donate it to Community Against Violence, which will give it to a Taos family that could use a little extra holiday cheer.

Joining The Taos News as sponsors are El Monte Sagrado Resort, Taos County Chamber of Commerce, Museum Association of Taos, Taos Community Foundation and Wal-Mart.

“Taos is a town dedicated to bettering the lives of those who call it home,” said Michael Cerletti, Secretary of the New Mexico Tourism Department. “Community leaders who seek creative ways to keep Taos a vital community with events, such as the Festival of Trees and Wreaths, are to be commended.”

“The festival recognizes the efforts of all the nonprofit organizations in Taos County, and this is one chance that we all have to make a difference and help those in need,” said Joanne Crass, The Taos News advertising manager.

Admission is $15 per adult; children are admitted free. All admission proceeds go to the Museum Association of Taos, which uses the money for its education programs.
