Roswell-UFO-MuseumThe Roswell Incident: some an unknown flying object crashed into the earth a few miles north of this small town in New Mexico. The idea seems like something that came from a science-fiction movie, but on July 1947 something happened that changed the story of Roswell, and the State of New Mexico, forever. There has been much speculation on the events that occurred. Perhaps it was a flying saucer? Perhaps it was a weather balloon? Perhaps an elaborate military cover-up was designed to leave curious minds wondering.
Whatever the case may be, during the 1980s a UFO researcher by the name of Stanton Friedman embarked on a journey to search for any information and possible witnesses to what occurred. This journey eventually led to the creating of the International UFO Museum and Research Center located in Roswell, NM. Friedman eventually began speaking to Lt. Walter Haut, the public information officer at the Roswell Army Air Field during the time when the mysterious events occurred. Haut remembered well the press releases and the orders from his superiors. Others in the military, as well as private citizens, added to the information obtained from Haut. This group included Done Schmitt, Kevin Randle and Tom Carey.
After debris that was recovered by rancher WW Mack Brazel was collected by the military, Haut issued a press release confirming a flying saucer was indeed what Brazel had found. The very next day there was another press release issued stating that what actually crashed was not a flying saucer, but a weather balloon. Some think this was the beginning of the Roswell Incident/UFO cover-up.
More than 60 years later, the incident is still shrouded in mystery. The reality is that there are still more questions than answers.
Today, in Roswell, exists the International UFO Museum and Research Center and the annual UFO festival. Both of which are dedicated to giving information and evidence about the Roswell Incident. The museum opened in 1991 and in 1996 earned the designation of “Top Tourist Destination of New Mexico.” The museum has outgrown three locations and is set to move to a fourth.
There are many rooms in the Museum that have been designed in the style of 1947, including a newsroom, a government “cover-up” room, and a general information room regarding “sightings.” The Research Center makes available various types of research materials including books and records.
The board of the Museum and Research Center boasts of nuclear physicists, a UFO expert, documentarians of strange phenomena, and one of the world’s leading experts on the Roswell UFO events of 1947.
The annual Roswell UFO Festival began in 1996 and since then has been a mecca of information and entertainment for serious and not-so-serious UFO enthusiasts. The festival features trade shows, alien costume contests, Fourth of July fireworks, parades and so much more.
The Museum frequently hosts tour and student groups. General admission to the Museum is $5 for adults, $2 for children ages 5-15, and free for children under the age of 4.
