Built by tribes indigenous to the area, the Aztec Ruins that can be found at Aztec Ruins National Monument date back to as early as the 12th century, not the 15th century like many early explores thought. And they were built by tribes indigenous to the area, not by civilizations from central Mexico as also originally assumed. Most likely, the people who made the area their home were related tribes from Mesa Verde, Colorado although it is believed there were ties to the Chaco culture south of them. If you visit today, you will find a walled village with over 400 rooms spread out over three levels. The ruins are part of 27 acre complex which includes several smaller unexplored sites. There is also a visitor center and picnic area. The visitors center features information about local plant and wild life, has a small bookshop and museum and a short video presentation of the ruins. Around the town of Aztec there are several local shops featuring Native American arts and crafts.
There is a $5 per person fee to visit the ruins. Touring is by foot and only certain areas are open to the public so pay attention to signage. The ruins are located two miles from Aztec, New Mexico, a community near Farmington, New Mexico in far northwest New Mexico.
